Hans Anderson Braaten (4/7/1880 Vagamo Norway - 2/28/1968 Rochester MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=35... ) married Ella T. Nereson (2/5/1892 Rock Dell MN - 1/18/1979 Salem Township MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=35... ) on 6/28/1921 in Byron MN. Both of them had children from previous marriages before they married each other.

The first wife of Hans was Julia Engerine Brakke (12/2/1888 MN - 6/29/1916 Olmsted county MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=35... ) on 1/6/1909 in Byron MN. They had three children together.

* Rikka Martha Braaten (11/30/1910 Salem Township, Olmsted county MN - 1/5/1997 Madelia MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=18... ) married Harry Hanson (128/1898 MN – 3/16/1965 Linden MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=18... ) on 1/28/1930 in New Ulm MN.
* Anna H. Braaten (7/2/1912 Byron MN - 3/9/2001 La Crosse WI; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=12... ) married Christian Brenengen (1/24/1910 - 12/9/1969; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=12... ). She later married Edward Partney (10/16/1914 - 4/26/2009; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=39... ) on 8/25/1984.
* Luella Braaten (9/11/1914 Rock Dell MN - 7/8/2004 Dodge Center MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=16... ) first married Lester Olson (2/26/1908 Olmsted county MN - 1/24/1978 in Minnetonka MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=16... ) on 4/1/1931 in Olmsted county. She later married LeRoy Joseph Porter (3/5/1914 Simpson MN - 10/8/1992 Rochester MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=16... ) on 2/23/1956 in Preston MN.

Hans and Julia appear together in the 1910 census in Salem MN with oldest son Walter, listed as Brooten: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M2GB-K5S

I was wondering the naturalization papers for Hans Braaten would have more information about his family, but someone advised me that the only immigration/naturalization information available right now are index records, with no images that would show what was actually in those records.

The obit for Hans Braaten shows that he came to the US at age 20, and it says that his first wife Julia Brakke died in 1913, although I was sure that Luella Braaten Porter was her biological child, and his obit says that Hans did not remarry Ella Nereson until 6/28/1921. Julia's tombstone and this death record say she died in 1916: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FD3N-731 Hans was "survived by four sons, Hilman of Rochester, David, Reuben and John, all of Byron; one step-son, Walter Broten of Rochester; four daughters, Mrs. Willis (Ellen) Lubahn of Oronoco, Mrs. Harry (Rikka) Hanson of Hanska, Minn., Mrs. Chris (Anna) Brenengen of Racine, Wis., and Mrs. LeRoy (Luella) Porter of Eyota; one step-daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Amanda) Larson of Rochester; one brother, John Broten of Rochester; one sister, Mrs. Ronnoug Teigen of Norway; 34 grandchildren and 60 great-grandchildren. Three sisters and two brothers also preceded him in death."

The marriage record for Hans A. Braaten (son of Anders Braaten to Ragnhild Braaten) to Julia W. "Brokke" (daughter of William Brakke) on 1/6/1909 in Byron MN: https://mediasvc.ancestry.com/v2/image/namespaces/60623/medi... The 1910 census lists Walter as a son of Hans, but Walter's age is 2 years, and the number of years married for Hans and Julia is "0". Looking at the 1910 census, Julia had one child, one still living, and Walter was listed with them, so the easy conclusion here is that he was the child of Julia but not the child of Hans. The obit for Hans calls Walter Broten a stepson, and note that at least one brother of Hans spelled his name Broten per the obit, so could Julia have been the widow of another brother of Hans? Walter was born before Hans and Julia were married, meaning he is likely the son of Julia from a prior marriage, possibly with a brother or other relative of Hans, or that Hans legally adopted Walter and gave him a version of his last name.

* Walter Alfred Broten (3/31/1908 Rock Dell MN – 1/7/1988 Bemidji MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=69... ) first married Esther Violet Walker (4/11/1915 Rochester MN - 3/1/1963 Rochester MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=15... ) in 1932, and later married Virginia Clarice Anna Buck (8/15/1920 Saint Louis county MN – 3/26/2005 Bemidji MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=18... ) in 1965 in Preston MN.

I do not have a link, but in the MN birth index there is a Walter Alfred Broten born 3/30/1908 in Olmsted County whose mother's maiden name was "Beaake"; if that is a typo, it could have been Julia Brakke? This would him in the SSDI (3/31/1908 - 1/7/1988): https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JYTD-6PN and the MN death index: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V4Q8-4R3 This is Walter and Esther with their family in the 1940 census: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KSV2-LHW This is Esther Violet Broten (4/11/1915 – 3/1/1963 Olmsted county MN) in the MN death index: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V4Q8-HLB and a death cert for her (which shows her as divorced, but still lists a husband): https://mediasvc.ancestry.com/v2/image/namespaces/60623/medi... The obit for Esther Broten shows that she married Walter Broten Sr in 1932 and they later divorced, and her "Surviving children include: Walter Jr., of Kasson; Mrs. John Cooley of Waterloo, Iowa; Harry of Rochester; Stanley of Waterloo; Mrs. Dennis Nelson of Rochester; Richard of Rochester, and Miss Joyce Broten, address not listed. In addition to 16 grandchildren, she also is survived by one sister, Mrs. Ed Muske of Pine Island, and two brothers, Ernest Wacker of St. Paul and Fred of Rochester."As for his second wife Virginia, this must be her in the SSDI: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VM6W-2Z5 The obit for Walter calls her Virginia Pickron, and she had a son from a previous marriage named William Pickron per her own obit, but she also had a brother named Eugene Buck so I figured that is her maiden name, and I do not have a link but a birth record for Virginia Buck proved it.

Rikka in the MN death index: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V47Z-X5M SSDI record for Harry Hanson: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J1GH-9M8 and a death cert for him: https://mediasvc.ancestry.com/v2/image/namespaces/60623/medi... This must be the family in Linden Township MN in 1940: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KSVV-6VR

Anna is buried with her first husband, and her second husband is buried with his first wife.

The obit for Lester Olson shows that he married Luella Braaten in 1931 but they divorced in 1956, and he was survived by "five daughters, Mrs. Gene (Phyllis) Jensen of Anchorage, Alaska, Mrs. William (Harriet) Jester of Helena, Mont., Mrs. John (Shirley) Mahon of Groton, Conn., Mrs. Marlene Boutelle of Eyota, and Mrs. Mike (Lois) Arndt of Byron; a son, Duane of Bay Springs, Miss.; his mother, Mrs. Gilbert (Mary) Olson of rural Byron; 20 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Granville Olson of Byron; and a sister, Mrs. Robert (Maxine) Johnson of Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by a son, two daughters, a grandson, and two brothers."

The first husband of Ella was Alfred Aaby (11/18/1887 MN - 5/8/1919 Olmsted county MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=36... ). They had two children together that I know of.

* Amanda Alene Aaby (12/13/1914 Rock Dell MN - 12/9/1978 Rochester MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=35... ) married Dennis Orlando Larson (12/13/1911 Rock Dell MN - 3/9/1985 Rochester MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=35... ) on 5/17/1940 in Cresco IA.
* Helman A. Aaby (9/9/1916 Olmsted count MN - 7/30/1917 Salem MN)

The obit for Ella claims that first husband Alfred Aaby died in 1913 and she remarried to Hans Braaten on 6/28/1921. She was survived by "four sons, Hilman, David, Rueben and John Braaten, all of Rochester; a daughter, Mrs. Willis (Ellen) Lubahn of Oronoco; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Harry (Rikka) Hanson of Hanske, Minn., Mrs. Chris (Anna) Brenengen of La Crosse, Wis., and Mrs. Le Roy (Luella) Porter of Mantorville; 34 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alma Nereson of Rochester. She was also preceded in death by a son, a daughter, five sisters and six brothers." Amanda and Helman from her first husband did indeed die before her.

This is the death record for baby Helman, although I do not know where he is buried: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FDSX-PM9 Per matching the date of birth, Alfred's WWI draft card says he has a wife and two children: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K87P-XTW I suspect that based on the timing, Helman was still alive at that time, although there could have been another child if Helman died by the time that draft card was written. Ella's memorial mentions that on the 1930 census it shows Ella married to Hans with an Amanda Aaby, who is listed as his stepdaughter.

The obit for Amanda Aaby Larson shows that she was survived by "her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Harlin (Betty Ann) Ackman of Oronoco, and Mrs. William (Darlene) Anderson of Rochester; seven grandchildren; four brothers, Hilman, Richard, Reuben and John, all of Rochester; four sisters, Mrs. Willis (Ellen) Lubahn of Oronoco. Mrs. Chris (Anna) Brenengen of La Crosse, Wis. Mrs. Harry (Rikka) Hanson of New Ulm, and Mrs. Louella Porter of Mantorville; and her mother, Mrs. Ella Braaten of Rochester. She was preceded in death by her father." The obit for Dennis Larson shows that he was survived by "two daughters, Mrs. Harlin (Bettyann) Ackman of Oronoco and Mrs. William (Darlene) Anderson of Rochester; six grandsons and one granddaughter; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Myra Schuck of Byron and Mrs. Bernice Brummond of Wabasha and a brother, Lloyd Larson of Rochester. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister."

Hans and Ella then had at least five more children together, and raised all of their children together in a blended family.

* Hilman Braaten (born c. 1921 MN) married Martha Christina Jorgenson (11/30/1933 MN - 11/8/1996 MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=16... ) on 5/13/1950 in Kasson MN.
* Ellen Ruby Braaten (6/15/1925 Olmsted county MN - 4/11/2008 Rochester MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=26... ) was the second wife of Willis Blair Lubahn (11/16/1920 Oronoco MN – 3/4/2001 Rochester MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=86... ), and they were married on 10/25/1947 in Rock Dell MN.
* David Richard Braaten (6/5/1928 Salem Township MN - 3/31/1979 Rochester MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=39... ) married Jane Ann Russell in 1951 in Florida.
* Rueben Andrew Braaten (9/30/1930 Rock Dell MN - 5/5/2003; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=16... )
* John Albert Braaten (2/23/1934 Salem Township MN - 4/12/1984 Rochester MN; http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=35... )

Per Ellen's obit, Hilman Braaten was still alive in April 2008, but her other four brothers and four half-sisters had died by then. So I know Richard, Reuben, and John had died by then, so there may have been one other full brother for her who died by 2008 (unless that was talking about Walter), and then her half-sisters who predeceased her were Rikka, Anna, Luella, and Amanda. Per Luella's obit, all of the siblings but Hilman and Ellen were dead by 2004.

As for Hilman, this could be a hit for Hilman Henry Braaten (12/29/1921 - 10/5/2008) in the SSDI, last residence Rochester MN: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JB6F-ZPK I do not see an obit or memorial for that Hilman to prove it. That said, the tombstone picture for his wife Martha was taken in 2016 and he did not have a death date yet. He did not get a full obit in the Rochester papers as far as I can see, but a brief death notice has no family information: http://www.postbulletin.com/death-notices/article_97d96794-6...

Here is a marriage record of Ella to Hans on 6/27/1921 in Olmsted county: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2M5-H93H So, the 1920 census does show Hans widowed with 4 children (Walter, Rikka, Anna, Luella): https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MWBN-NWW And by the 1930 census Hans is married to Ella, and they have added children Hilman, Ellen, and Richard as well as Amanda from Ella's first marriage: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X38V-RB7 Rueben was not born yet by the time of the 1930 census and John was born a few years later, and based on the 1940 census if does not appear there were any other children: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KSVP-FYL

David is often listed as Richard, but his death record: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V4CH-4D1 does list him as David. Per his death certificate he was divorced from Jane Ann Russell, with whom he had several children per FamilySearch. I have no other information about her. The obit for David R. Braaten shows that he and married Jane Russel in 1951 in Florda, although they were later divorced - that said, we may be able to match him to her by their children. He was survived by "four sons, David, James and Thomas of Minneapolis, and Joel of Rapid City, S.D.; one grandson; three brothers, Hilman, John and Rueben, all of Rochester; one sister, Mrs. Willis (Ellen) Lubahn of Oronoco; three step-sisters, Mrs. Harry (Rikka) Hanson of Hanska, Minn., Mrs. Chris (Anna) Brenengen of La Crosse, and Mrs. Le Roy (Luella) Porter of Mantorville. One brother and one sister preceded him in death."

I do not know if Rueben was married.

John in the MN death index: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V4CG-8PQ According to his death certificate he was never married. The obit for John Braaten shows that he was survived by "two brothers, Hilman and Reuben, both of Rochester; and four sisters, Mrs. Willis (Ellen) Lubahn of Oronoco, Mrs. LeRoy (Luella) Porter of Byron, Mrs. Chris (Anna) Brenengen of La Cross, Wis., and Mrs. Harry (Rikka) Hanson of Hanska, Minn. He was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister and his parents." I can assume that the dead sister was Amanda again, and the dead brother was Richard in 1979, but again we have another brother, so maybe Ella really did have another son that I do not know about yet?

This is the obit for Luella Porter: http://www.postbulletin.com/luella-b-porter----rochester/art... and Martha Jorgenson Braaten: http://www.postbulletin.com/services-to-be-later-for-martha-... and Rueben Braaten: http://www.postbulletin.com/rueben-andrew-braaten----rochest...

I do have obits for Hans and Ella Braaten, Walter, Esther, and Virginia Broten, Rikka Hanson, Anna and Edward Partney, Christian Brenengen, Luella and LeRoy Porter, Lester Olson, Alfred Aaby, Amanda and Dennis Larson, Martha Braaten, Ellen and Willis Lubahn, David Richard Braaten, Reuben Braaten, and John Braaten, but I do not have obits for Julia Braaten and Harry Hanson.
