I have been searching for what feels like forever for this info. My gggrandfather was known (to our family and otherwise) as Glover Collins (b. 1881 in Kentucky, m. Rellie Carter between 1900 and 1910, had many children including Bill Thompson Collins, Roland Collins, Jake Collins, and many more.) On the 1920 census, he was listed as Glover Thompson, and the whole family had the surname Thompson. It appears that his true name was originally Thomas Thompson. No one in my family has info on this, only that my ggrandmother (Mary Jane Tobias, m. Roland Collins) didn't know that their original surname had been Thompson until after they were married. I can't find birth certificates for Glover Collins, Glover Thompson, or Thomas Thompson (at least not what seems to be the correct one; there are many Thomas Thompsons in KY apparently.) I also can't find any type of marriage recording between Rellie and Glover or anyone else for that matter. I want to find a paper trail of the name change and/or what caused it. It's a big family secret, apparently, and my sisters and I are a bit obsessed. TIA and sorry if I left out relevant info!
