Can anyone help? Some members of a tree I’m researching worked as lightermen on the Thames, and they owned a ‘lighter road.’ I am unable to find a reliable source for the exact definition of a ‘lighter road’. Was it a route through the water, or on land? A causeway of some sort? A launch or mooring? I would appreciate any guidance towards books/sites with definitions. (See also: ‘mooring chain.’) Uses of the terms in newspaper articles of the time are frequent but there is always the assumption the reader then knew what they were.
(I’m not looking for an explanation of lightermen, thank you - if you are, I would recommend Henry Mayhew’s London Labour and the London Poor. )
