The U.S. Department of Defense developed the Awards Information Management System (AIMS) to support the processing of award recommendations submitted for approval by the Chief of Naval Operations, Commandant of the Marine Corps, and the Secretary of the Navy. These awards consisted of individual awards approved for sailors, marines, and Department of Navy civilians and unit awards approved for Navy and Marine Corps activities. Data from AIMS was used to produce letters about approved awards; certificates; monthly statistics for the Secretary of the Navy, Chief of Naval Operations, and the Commandant of the Marine Corps; and various reports including ad hoc reports. Starting in 1999, awards submitted to the Commandant of the Marine Corps were processed on the Marine Corps awards system named the Awards Processing System. Awards for Marines submitted for approval to the Secretary of the Navy continue to be processed on AIMS.
